Ray was born in Guernsey County and was the son of Henry "Hank" or "Newt" Stroud and the grandson of John A. and Vera Breeden Stroud. Ray was killed en route to California after being in Byesville, Guernsey County for the funeral of a relative, Charles Stroud, Jr.
