Reverend Joseph P. Wachowski
1878 - 1941

Founder of St. Adalbert's parish in Toledo. Ordained by Bishop Ignatius Horstmann of Cleveland in June, 1903. Was educated at St. Stanislaus school in Toledo and then at St. Ignatius College and St. Mary's Seminary of Cleveland. Was assigned as pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows parish in Ashtabula, Ohio and Immaculate Conception parish in Grafton, Ohio before being selected by Bishop Horstmann to organize St. Adalbert's parish in 1907. Fr. Wachowski remained at St. Adalbert's until his resignation due to ill health in 1937, when he retired to Bay Village, Ohio. Fr. Wachowski was also well-known among the Polish community for his knowledge of art and Polish history and literature. In 1934, his collection was on display at the Toledo Museum of Art in an exhibit of Polish arts and craft. Also in his possession was a collection of letters written by Tadeusz Kosciuszko. His Requiem Mass was offered by Bishop Karl J. Alter.
