William Starling Sullivant LLD
A Classical Scholar and Member of Various Learned Societies in Europe and America
Born Jan. 15, 1803
Died April 30, 1873

Operated his father's (Lucas Sullivant) surveying business upon his father's death. Studied and cataloged various plant life in Ohio and 1840, he published his findings in "A Catalogue of Plants, Native and Naturalized, in the Vicinity of Columbus, Ohio." He also studied and cataloged various mosses in the US, Central America, South America, and in Pacific Islands, becoming one of the foremost bryologists in the United States. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1872 and named a newly discovered moss, “Sullivantia Ohioensis,” in his honor.
