Ruth E. Ward, 81, of St. Paris, departed this life at 7:40 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003. She had been a resident at the Wellington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Urbana since Nov. 18, 2002. She gained many new friends while there, including "Smokey" David Yeager and a wonderful staff that is too numerous to mention. Her care was the best, it was given with the most professional and yet personal attention possible. She suffered from an inoperable brain tumor. Ruth was born in Urbana on April 1, 1921 to Talmadge F. and E. Hazel (Impson) Hill. Ruth was the youngest of three children. Ruth E., Robert F. Hill and Norma Lavonne (Hill) (Lewis) DeRemer. All have preceded her in death. Ruth graduated from Urbana High School in 1939 and went to work as an operator for the Champaign Telephone Company. She met Carl R. Ward and communicated with him during his service in World War II, marrying him, after his return on Aug. 10, 1946. They took residence at 10274 Ward Road on the Ward family farm. Ruth became a housewife, a farmhand, and a helper in Carl's insurance business. On the passing of Carl's mother in 1967, they moved into the home at 10116 Ward Road, also on the farm. Ruth continued as a dedicated partner in the operation of the farm until Carl's death in 1985. Since then Ruth has continued to manage the farm and maintain the homestead. Ruth found pleasure in seeing her farm worked and in watching over her woods. She loved all animals and was a supporter of the ASPCA. Although Ruth had many wonderful experiences during her life with Carl, such as flying their Cherokee 140 together, she also suffered more than her fair share of the trials and tribulations that all mankind must go through. All this behind her, she now resides with God in life everlasting. Ruth had no children, she leaves behind a niece, Nancy L. (Lewis) Sturgeon of Springfield and a nephew, Richard E. Lewis of Urbana as well as 14 grand and great nieces and nephews. Ruth's parents were one of nine and one of eight children, providing her with many cousins. One cousin that was very special to her is Mary K. (Impson) Gillespie of Dayton. Ruth also had a nephew and two nieces from Carl's side of the family: Phillip, Kay and Ruth Scott. Included in her expanded family were many dear friends and neighbors. God bless all. It would be incomplete without mentioning Ruthie's many cats, kittens and dog Barnie (who now needs a good home). Ruth was a member of the Methodist Church of Urbana, where she was married. She more recently attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, St. Paris and also was a close friend with staff member and music director, Dan Kaffenbarger and his wife Janet (Vulgamore) of the Grace Baptist Church in Urbana. Visitation will be for family and friends at the Richeson-Wickham and Atkins Funeral Home in St. Paris. Viewing hours will be 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today. Services will be held by the Rev. Clifford Kissinger in the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with burial to follow at the Spring Grove Cemetery on North Heck Hill Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA, the Paws Animal Shelter in Urbana or to the Wellington, also Urbana.
