Dr. Thomas D. Brown, 68, of 9990 N. Hardin Road, Piqua, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Sunday Sept. 28, 2008, in his residence after an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Piqua to the late Cyril J. "Cy" and Hazel J. (Young) Brown. He married Mary A. Sardella on Aug. 25, 1985, in Akron; and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, Nathan Thomas Brown of Piqua; a daughter, Leah Nicole Brown of Piqua; a cousin, Anita (Robert) Hass of Conover; sister-in-law, Marlene Moosa of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Ernest and James Sardella of Ashtabula; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death on July 16, 1983, by one son, Dana Brown.

Dr. Brown graduated Piqua Central High School in 1957, received a bachelor of arts degree on June 4, 1961, from Miami University of Oxford, pursued his post graduate study at The Ohio State College of Medicine. While at Ohio State, he received the LANDACRE Society Award, a very prestigious honor founded in honor of F.L. Landacre, professor of anatomy for academic excellence and contributions to medical science through research.

Following medical school, he completed a rotating internship at the University of Texas in Galveston and then he served in the United States Public Health Service Indian Hospital in Fort Yates, N. D. He gained a lot of experience in labor, delivery, and general practice while at the Indian Reservation. Following the service he worked in general practice in City of Commerce, Calif. and then served his residency at both the L.A. County Hospital in radiation oncology and also the Harbor General Hospital. He was certified as a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiology in December 1975.

After several years of experience in California he relocated to the Akron area where he became the director of oncology at Akron City Hospital. He was an associate professor of radiation oncology at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, Rootstown, director of oncology for Akron Children's Hospital, the Children's Cancer study group, and associated with Case Western University College of Medicine, Rainbow Babies, and Children's Hospital of Cleveland.

Additionally, in 1987 Thomas also studied at the Centre Leon Berard Cancer Hospital, Lyon, France under the direction of Dr. Jean Papillon, studying implant procedures and techniques.

He served as the director of radiation oncology at the Yuba-Sutter Radiation Oncology Center, Yuba City, Calif. from 1986 to 1988.

Thomas then became director and founder of the Piqua Regional Radiation Oncology Center, from 1988 to 2002. He was the first radiation oncologist to return to Piqua and serve Miami and Shelby county areas. He was chairman of the cancer committee and tumor board, Piqua Memorial Hospital from 1990 to 1997, and a member of the Miami County Medical Society from 1988 to 2001.

Thomas had numerous hobbies and interests outside of his rewarding career, but mostly he loved to be with his family. He had wonderful memories of his travels to many European countries in the 1990s with his favorite being a small 15th century village in southern France.

He had very fond memories of his years 1977 to 1979 as a winning Pee Wee league baseball coach and soccer coach in the Rolling Hills Estate, Calif.

He later enjoyed helping with Lehman High School Science Olympiad in 2002 to 2004, after his retirement in 2001. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Grilliot as celebrant. Burial will follow in Fletcher Cemetery.
