William E. "Dugan" Cowan, 80, of 3969 Ohio 66B, died July 25, 2007, at 4:11 a.m. at Piqua Manor Nursing Home in Piqua.

He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Mercer County, the son of the late William Howard and Mabel McGillvary Cowan.

He married Velura Pitsenbarger on May 22, 1949, and she survives him. The Cowans had been married 58 years.

He is also survived by two sons, William D. and Karen Cowan of Houston and John B. and Melony Cowan of Covington; two daughters, Linda V. Cowan of Maplewood and Susan E. Schmiesing of Bradford; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cowan was a member of Houston Congregational Christian Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a founding member of the Houston Volunteer Fire Department, serving more than 33 years and served 13 years on the Houston Rescue Squad.

He was retired from Minster Machine Company after 43 years of faithful service. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting.

Services will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at Houston Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Jim Manuel.
Burial will be in Houston Cemetery.

Velura G. (Pitsenbarger) Cowan, 89, of Piqua, formerly of Houston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2015. Velura was born March 22, 1926, to the late Leonard and Grace (Brannan) Pitsenbarger.
She married William ‘Dugan’ Cowan on May 22, 1949 and he preceded her in death on July 25, 2007.

Velura is survived by four children, Bill Cowan, of Houston, Linda Cowan, of Maplewood, Susan Schmiesing, of Bradford, John and Melony Cowan, of Covington; grandchildren, Aimee (Gary) Craig, Steve Cowan, Travis (Morgen Torbett) Schmiesing, Dana (Herb) Thompson, Sommer (Skip) Miller, Shaun (Victoria) Cowan, Michael (Sara) Cowan; seven great-grandchildren, Kyle and Megan Craig, Ski, Austy, Tucker and Ross Miller, Aliyah Cowan; one sister, Phyllis (Ted) Feragne, of Tucson, Arizona.

Velura was preceded in death by one grandchild, Brian Cowan, one daughter-in-law, Karen (Ashbrook) Cowan; four brothers, Roy, Charles, Rex and Clyde Pitsenbarger; five sisters, infant Nona Pitsenbarger, Jeanette Helman, Onda Meyer, Lorna Kiehl and Linda Paisley.

Velura was a 1944 graduate of Houston High School and a 1948 graduate of Miami University. She retired from Houston High School as an English and Spanish teacher. She was a member of the Houston Congregational Church where she was also a member of the Ladies Aide. Velura always enjoyed reading books, working crossword puzzles, vacationing with family and collecting unique plates and antiques.

Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. James Manuel officiating. Burial will be at the Houston Cemetery.
