George J. Cooper, 75, Houston, went home to be with the Lord at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, following a ten-year battle with leukemia. He was born May 26, 1933, in Fleming County, Kentucky, to the late George T. and Arizona (Riddle) Cooper. He married Hazel Fugate on July 4, 1955 in Chavies, Ky.; she preceded him in death on February 19, 2006.

Mr. Cooper is survived by two sons, Denny Cooper of Houston, and Dwayne (Mary) Cooper of Troy; a daughter, Darlene (Mike) Heber of Piqua; four grandchildren, Mitchell Baker, Weston Baker, Beth Cooper, and Amie Cooper; a sister, Dale (Don) Crosthwaite of Kettering; a sister-in-law, Golda Cooper of Wallingford, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Glendall, Rev. Wendell, Kenneth, and Johnny Cooper.

George was a graduate of Fleming County High School in Kentucky and served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army. He worked for the Kroger Co. for 15 years, and owned and operated Cooper's Market in Houston from 1962-1986. He drove a school bus for Hardin-Houston Schools for 35 years, where he also worked as a custodian. George was a member of Troy Baptist Temple and the Houston Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, mowing his yard, being outdoors, and spending time with his family. He was a man of honor who loved serving his Lord and will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and community.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9, at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home, Piqua, with Pastor Chris Williams and Dr. Jeffery Fugate officiating. Burial will follow in Houston Cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad

Hazel Cooper, 67, of Houston, OH, died on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at the Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, Ohio. She was born in Chavis, Kentucky to the late John and Edna Henson Fugate. She married George J. Cooper, and he survives her husband of 50 years. Also surviving, sons and daughters-in-law; Denny Cooper of Houston, OH; Dwayne and Mary Cooper of Troy, OH; daughter and son-in-law; Darlene Cooper and Mike Heber of Piqua, OH; brother, Ben Fugate of Richmond, KY; sisters, Lula Combs of Beavercreek, OH; Mahala "Haney" Baker of Lexington, KY; Nora Faye Merrill of Krypton, KY; four grandchildren, Mitchell and Weston Baker and Beth and Amie Cooper. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sam Fugate and Jimmy Fugate and sister, Eva Mae Spencer. She was a member of the Troy Baptist Temple. She previously owned and operated the Coopers Market in Houston, OH. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 10:30am at the Troy Baptist Temple, Troy, Ohio with the Dr. Rick Arrowood and Pastor Jeff Fugate officiating. Burial will take place in Houston Cemetery
