Catharine was born January 4, 1834, in York Township, Morgan County, Ohio. She was the daughter of John Hampshire and Susanna (Steinbrenner) Hampshire. Catharine was married twice. She married her first husband, Austin Edington, in Morgan County on June 30, 1851. Initially, she and Austin lived in Pike County, Ohio, where they had seven daughters. In 1861 Austin moved Catharine and the girls to Vinton County to live with her mother, and Austin joined the Union Army, serving in Company E of the 63rd Ohio Infantry. Austin died of pneumonia in Corinth, Mississippi, on April 9, 1863. Catharine then married Aaron Schenck in about 1866. After their marriage the family moved to the village of Goshen in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Unfortunately, Catharine died a short time later on April 19, 1873.
