RITES WEDNESDAY FOR JOHN CANODE, 93, POINT ROCK MINISTER, ORCHARDIST, DIES SUN.
Wilkesville – Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 18, at 1 pm for John W. Canode, age 93, one of Vinton County’s oldest living men who died at his Carpenter home near Point Rock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Russell Woltz officiated at the Columbia Chapel rites assisted by Rev. Morris. Burial followed in the Castor Cemetery in charge of the Strong and Son Funeral Home in Wilkesville. Mr. Canode lived in Vinton Township near the Meigs County line, but was born in Knox township son of George W. and Nancy Graham Canode. His father was a teacher. John Canode himself was a minister, educated in the Bible Christian School and the Ohio Eastern Christian Conference School. He held pastorates at Haydenville and in Athens and Morgan counties and taught Sunday School at his home church of Columbia Chapel for many years. He also served on the Vinton Twp. Board of Education, and worked as a farmer, orchardist, coal miner and educator as well as a minister. His wife, Hettie Saxton died 25 years ago. He is survived by four children, Clarence Canode, James Daye Canode, of near Point Rock, Mrs. Harry Levis (Ellen) of Wilkesville and Mrs. Dallas Hensler (Grace) at home. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 1 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. He officiated at over 200 funerals and never charged a fee and united many Vinton Countians in marriage. He also organized and coached baseball teams and accumulated a large library of books. He was active operating a small commercial orchard up until the time of his death.
