Carl "Kayo" Zirkle, 81, of Saint Paris, passed away at 12:28 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, in Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy.

Kayo was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Miami County, a son of the late John R. and Elsie (Martin) Zirkle.

He was married for 61 years to the former Betty L. Jay, whom he married Sept. 26, 1947. Betty survives in St. Paris.

Together they raised three sons, Rick (Paula) Zirkle of Lexington, Ky., Terry Zirkle of Aurora, Ill., and Bob Zirkle of Saint Paris. Kayo also was a loving grandfather to six grandchildren, Justin (Annie) Zirkle of Miami, Fla., Jared (Kelly) Zirkle of Louisville, Ky., Julie Zirkle of Kalamazoo, Mich., Tyson (Jamie) Zirkle of Urbana, Bradley (Jessica) Zirkle of Fletcher and Brian Zirkle of Troy. He was a proud great-grandfather of 13 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Jean Zirkle of Richmond, Ind., and Betty (Ernest) Hague of Fletcher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Johnston; and a brother, Charles Zirkle. Kayo was a 1946 graduate of Brown Township School and a member of the First Baptist Church, St. Paris.

He retired in 1987 from Zed Industries in Vandalia.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Suber-Shively Funeral Home, 201 W. Main St., Fletcher, with the Rev. Dr. James VanZile of the First Baptist Church presiding. Burial will follow in Fletcher Cemetery.
