Vertie Frances Sands, 93, of Sidney, Ohio passed out of this life on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at the Dorothy Love Retirement Community.

She was born in Miami County, Ohio to the late Earl and Myrtie (Morris) Worthington on February 23, 1911.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Otto D. Sands in 1988. Along with her parents and husband preceding her in death, are three brothers; Carl, Johnnie and Horace and one sister, Bessie Hope Worthington.

She is survived by her two step-daughters and their husbands, Jean and Melvin Becker of Ottoville, Ohio and Virginia and Robert Cullins of Rancha Santa Margarita, California. Also a sister is surviving, Lova Mae Worthington. She has three grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are six nieces.

She was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Troy;Staunton Grange; American Legion Auxiliary of Troy. She was a 75 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Troy Chapter # 256. In her early years, Vertie was active in 4-H work, later in youth work in her church and always active in community life.

She was a graduate of Lena-Conover High School. She attended Miami University where she earned a teachers certificate.

She was a retired school teacher at Springcreek Township Schools.

The Rev. Al Bastin will be officiating the service with burial in Fletcher Cemetery, Fletcher, Ohio.
