EUGENE L. DURNELL, 85, Sidney passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 10:23 P.M. at Wilson Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 14, 1926 in Piqua, Ohio, the son of the late Lewis and Anna (Hetzler) Durnell.

On June 8, 1947, at the Oran Congregational Church in Oran, Ohio, he was married to Norma Jean (Short) Durnell, who survives him along with their daughters; Sherry and her husband John Deitering of Sidney, Kristina and her husband Bernard Barhorst of Piqua, and daughter-in-law, Judy (Kendall) Durnell of Sidney, eight grandchildren and their spouses; Melissa (Swob) Hirschfeld and her husband Rick of Sidney, Mark Swob of Fort Loramie, Michael Barhorst and his wife Christina (Boeckman) of Sidney, Deanna (Durnell) Eilerman and her husband Mark of Fort Loramie, Jeremy Barhorst of Troy, Nicholas Barhorst of Piqua, Elizabeth Durnell of Columbus, and Stephanie (Durnell) Lancaster and her husband Brandon of Kentucky.

He is also survived by a sister, June (Durnell) and her husband Charles Knouff, sister-in-law, Frances (Charles) Durnell and sister-in-law Joan (Donald) Mills. He has 11 great grandchildren; Lyndsi and Jayden Drees, Samantha Fairchild, Siera and Andrew Swob, Ethan and Quinn Barhorst, Jay Kacin, Kayla Barhorst and Kylie and McKenzie Hirschfeld. Also five stepgrandchildren; Deborah (Deitering) Blair and her husband Tim of Tennessee, Sandra (Deitering) McRoberts of Sidney, Jeffery Deitering and his wife Jane of Sidney, Annette (Deitering) Kauffman and her husband David of McCartyville, and Jack Deitering and his wife Karen of Missouri and 7 step-great-grandchildren; Alisha and Brittany Deitering, Ashley Ambos, Caleb and Taylor Kauffman and Meghan Baty and Jordan Deitering also survive. Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Gary Durnell in 2010, a brother, Charles Robert Durnell in 2008, and sister, Helen Joyce Durnell in 1933.

He attended Houston School and enlisted in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was employed with the Stolle Corporation and worked there for 30 years until his retirement in 1989. He is also a lifetime member of the Sidney American Legion Post 217, the VFW, and the Amvets.

Eugene was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, where a Funeral Service will be held Monday at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Jonathan W. Schriber officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Houston Cemetery in Houston, Ohio.
