Donald Fred Leist, 81, of Stoker Road, Houston, passed away early Friday morning, May 29, 2009, at his home after a five- month battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Piqua, the son of the late Jesse A. and Ella M. (Simmons) Leist.

On July 19, 1947, at the Cheyenne, Wyo. Army Base, Donald married Betty J. Jones, who survives with two daughters, Patricia (Ronald) Pleiman of Fort Loramie and Brenda Leist of Houston; a son-in-law, Richard Stein of Medina; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by a sister, Anna (Omer) Hayes of West Milton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ruth Leist of Houston and George (Ollie) Jones of Houston; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; a daughter, Donna Jean Stein; one grandson; a brother, John Leist and a brother-in-law, Richard (Matilda) Jones.

Mr. Leist was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and had attained the rank of sergeant.

Donald attended the Houston Congregational Christian Church where he also served as deacon and trustee. He was a charter member of the Houston Community Association, fire department and rescue squad and had called bingo for 30 years.

He was a life member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau and had also served on the board of Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation Services for 12 years. He was a volunteer for the Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Footprints on the Heart and an avid supporter of Shelby County Relay for Life.

Donald was a lifelong farmer and loved every day of it. He worked for 15 years at the French Oil Machinery Co. in Piqua and for 10 years at Sidney Ford. He was a 1945 graduate of Houston High School. In his leisure time, he enjoyed helping others and traveling.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Houston congregational Christian Church with Pastor James Manuel presiding. Burial will follow in Houston Cemetery.
