Norris E. Helman, 85, passed away on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at 3:55 p.m. at his residence.

He was born on April 30, 1925, in Oran, the son of the late Earl and Edna (Burns) Helman.

On Sept. 5, 1948, he married Dorothy Potts who survives along with two sons, Bob (Cathy) Helman, of Sidney, and John Helman, of Columbus; four daughters, Patricia (Robert) Freund, of Sidney, Susan (Timothy) Rickey, of New Carlisle, Carol Helman, of Tipp City, and Joyce (Preston) Powell, of Westerville; nine grandchildren, Julie and Amy Freund, Brian (Shannon) Helman, Sarah (Jim) Fox, Angela, David and Kristin Rickey, Craig Helman, Ben Powell; and seven great-grandchildren, Abby, Tori, Hayden, Wyatt, Bella, Kaylee, and Nolan also survive.

He is also survived by two brothers, Dale Helman, of Houston, and Lysle (Cacelia) Helman, of Greenville; brothers-in-law, James Knouff and Emerson Watkins, both of Sidney; and sister-in-law, Grace McFadden, of Washington Court House.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Marjorie Wick, Wauneta Helman and June Knouff; brothers-in-law, Marvin Wick and Robert McFadden; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Watkins and Vera Helman.

Mr. Helman graduated from Houston High School in 1943 and went on to own and operate his own construction company, Norris E. Helman General Contractor, for more than 35 years.

Norris was a charter member of the Shelby County Home Builders Association, a member of the Houston Grange for more than 50 years, served on the Cynthian Township Zoning Board, was a Republican Central Committeeman, and was on the Advisory Committee for the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School carpentry program for many years.

He was made an Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Houston FFA and was a long-time supporter of 4-H.

Mr. Helman was a life-long member of the Oran Christian Church, currently serving as deacon. Among the things that Norris truly enjoyed were spending time with his family, roaming his farm, eating his favorite chocolate candy and peanuts and wood working.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Oran Christian Church with the Rev. Dale Ritts officiating. Burial will be at Houston Cemetery.
