John Lawrence Slife, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at 6:21 a.m. at his residence.
John was born on July 29, 1940, at the home place, 529 Wagner Ave., to the late Tony Leo Slife and Clarissa Edna (Glick) Slife.
On July 25, 1969, John married Sue V. Knouff in Kent County, Grand Rapids, Mich., and she survives in Fort Loramie.
John was a faithful member of the Houston C. C. Church, since May 4, 1980. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, in Bernillo Co. Alb. N.M. Kirtland Air Force Base, with a rank of E-3, Mechanic. From 1964 thru 1991, John served in the Ohio National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1991 with 24 years of military service.
John also enjoyed woodworking, silversmithing, reading, TV, gambling (slot machines), and was a staunch supporter and follower of Cleveland Browns football. John had retired from Crown Equipment, New Bremen, as a tool grinder from August 1978 through June 2004. He was also employed at IMS Shelby County, Fort Loramie, as a part-time tool grinder from March 1997 through February 2005.
John is survived by his wife; one son, Jeffrey Lawrence Slife and wife, Carole, of Celina; one daughter, Janelle Sue Barga and husband, Sheldon, of Versailles; honorary son, Charles Beougher and wife, Shonna, of Franklin, Ind.; grandchildren, Lynnsey June Barga, Megan Janelle Barga, Alyssa Shari Barga, Michael Joseph Reed, La Raya Renee Bell Slife; brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, James R. Slife and wife, Susan, of Cookvile, Tenn., Thomas L. Slife, and wife, Melissa, of Piqua, Theresa A. Slife, of Piqua, Rick E. Slife and wife, Mary Lee Slife, Linda D. Davis, Leonard R. Slife, Marshal Combs, Kenneth Lee Hudson, all of Piqua, Charles T. Knouff and wife, Gail Ann, of Houston, Joyce L. Zircher and husband, Bernard, of Fort Loramie; parents-in-law, Charles L. Knouff and wife, Doris June, of Houston; and 38 nieces and nephews.
John was also preceded in death by one daughter, Shari Lynne Slife; sisters, Judith L. Hudson and Joanne Lee Robinson-Combs; one brother, Donald Lynn Slife; five nieces and nephews.
John was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, son-in-law and friend. He will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Houston C. C. Church, with the Rev. Greg Morrow officiating. Burial will follow in Houston Cemetery, Houston, with full military service provided by Sidney American Legion Post 217.
