Winfield Scott SHOEMAKER

Greenlawn Cemetery
Franklin County,
Ohio

John Adam was born Jul 18, 1878 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, and died Sep 23, 1911 in Marion, Franklin, Ohio. S/O Seth Shoemaker (B:1852-OH), and Amy Peasley (B:1858-OH). He married Ida Purtee on Apr 18, 1900 in Springfield, Clark, Ohio. (She was born Oct 10, 1881 in Portsmouth, Ohio, D/O Joseph Purtee and Mary Arthur).

John was employed as a switchman by the Cincinnati, Hamilton, & Dayton Railroad (*) In July 1911, he fell from a boxcar and broke his back. He was taken to a hospital in Cincinnati for several operations in an effort to save him. He was then returned to the Columbus area where he passed away two months later.

(*) The Cincinnati, Hamilton, & Dayton Railroad began in 1846, and was then acquired by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1917.

Winfield Scott was born Aug 18, 1880, probably in Columbus, and died Apr 27, 1911 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. S/O Seth Shoemaker (b:1852-OH), and Amy Peasley (B:1858-OH). He was noted as 29 and single in the 1910 census; and died a year later, so it is believed he was single at the time of his death. Ironically, Winfield was found dead near a railroad yard on 5th avenue.

John Adam Shoemaker and Winfield Scott Shoemaker were brothers. Their siblings included: Clarence, Mary, Christopher, Carlile, and Burl. Their parents Seth Shoemaker and Amy Peasley were married Apr 30, 1874 in Franklin County, Ohio.
